Use the best of both worlds to create impact

This Manifesto Film launches Loughborough Business School and its new brand idea – Progress With Purpose. You can read more about that here

But what this film (and indeed the rest of this project) has demonstrated is how external and internal teams can bring their expertise together for maximum impact.

There is an understandable tension that arises when ‘someone else’ is brought in to work on a project. The internal team can feel overlooked and under-appreciated. The external team can feel wary of being limited by narrow thinking and internal politics.

But when you get it right you get the best of both worlds and this project is a perfect example.

We set up a multi-disciplinary ‘Rocketship’ team at the start of the project to bring a diverse range of voices from across Loughborough Business School together. It acted as the lightning rod during the various stages of positioning, ideas and articulations, and provided an invaluable platform for challenge, counter-challenge and progress!

But critically, this level of collaboration continued into the whole of the creative process. The tone of voice, look and feel, iconography, photography and filming have been a blend of internal and external expertise; challenging, trusting and collaborating as one team in an honest, open and fully creative relationship. All focused on one objective – to support the new ethos of the School by creating global impact through communications.

This is just the first step. But it’s a significant one.

Here’s the insight for anyone in the HE sector.

You can blend the experience, knowledge and passion of your internal team with the challenge, wider-sector experience and outsider perspective of an external team. Creatively that relies on two key elements – shared objectives and mutual respect.

Those relationships don’t always happen instantly and are usually built over time. But the beauty of this project has shown that it doesn’t have to take long when people play nicely – and the result is getting the best of both worlds to create impact.
